Social Justice in Concert: A centuries-long narrative of socio-musical activism
In recent years, musicians and music institutions have enthusiastically embraced social justice as being central to their artistic pursuits. In doing so, they have tapped into a centuries-long tradition of socio-musical activism. In this talk, I will briefly consider the work the Venetian Ospedali of the 18th century, British Brass Bands of the 19th century, American Settlement Music Houses of the 20th century, and Sistema-inspired youth orchestras of the early 21st century. The intention of my talk is twofold: First, I wish to affirm that a stronger socio-musical lens would be advantageous for musicians to adopt, because it would ensure that their musical practice maintains relevance within the society in which it exists. Secondly, I will draw attention to some of the many ethical complexities pertaining to socio-musical activism.
