In the midst of a widening polycrisis of climate chaos, geopolitical instability and technological accelerationfulness, information systems has never been more central to sustainability. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of AIS SIGGreen, and Dr. Roya Gholami will reflect upon the evolution of Green IS scholarship as an important field that is at an inflection point in terms of its future. Based on critiques of mainstream business models, alternative models such as B Corps, or science-based frameworks (e.g., Project Drawdown), she develops a bolder agenda for Green IS research and education. Dr. Gholami will present four transformative pathways: mainstreaming sustainability matters in IS research, dismantling academic silos by advancing transdisciplinary reform; scaling up collaboration with natural and social sciences; and rethinking business education by utilizing action-oriented pedagogies that cultivate critical thinking, systems awareness, and hopeful agency to drive purposeful social change.

Dr. Roya Gholami is a tenured Associate Professor of Management Information Systems in the College of Business and Management at the University of Illinois Springfield. She holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the National University of Singapore and a Postgraduate Professional Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Aston University. Dr. Gholami has published and presented more than 70 papers in refereed international journals and conferences in areas of IT Value, Information Systems and Sustainability (Green IT/IS), IT Adoption and Implementation, and IT for Sustainable Development. She is an AIS Distinguished Member - Cum Laude and has held faculty positions at NEOMA Business School in France, Aston University in the United Kingdom, and Carnegie Mellon University. Her teaching focuses on Information Systems and Sustainability and Green Information and Operations Management.
