Dear campus community:

The UIS Police Department issues Public Safety Alerts to notify the UIS campus community to certain crimes to aid in the prevention of similar crimes. The UIS Police Department is committed to working with the campus community in identifying and arresting offenders and is releasing this information to aid in the community’s protection. This alert is being distributed with limited information so as not to release any type of identifying information about the victim. Additional information, including safety tips and support information, can be found toward the end of this email.

INCIDENT:

On the evening of 10/24/23 at approximately 10:45 p.m., a shooting occurred on Toronto Road near the Lake Pointe Apartments.  There was no information gathered that indicated the suspect had traveled toward UIS, however, Law enforcement authorities were actively searching for the responsible individual in the area.  As the search continued, the outer perimeter of the search would expand or contract based on information available, including road closures outside of where the search was actively being conducted.  At this time, UIS Police have recently been informed the suspect has been apprehended near I-55.

The University of Illinois Springfield is providing resources to assist those involved in this incident and will continue to take actions to maintain the safety and security of the campus community.
