6.2.26
Dear Colleagues —
I am pleased to share that, pending approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, Dr. Steven Johnson Jr. will be named Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Designate), effective June 16, 2026.
Dr. Johnson joined the University of Illinois Springfield in 2024 as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement and has quickly become a familiar and respected presence across both the Division of Student Affairs and the broader UIS community. Through his leadership, collaborative spirit and commitment to student success, he has built strong relationships with students, faculty and staff throughout campus.
Dr. Johnson will step into the role following the departure of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Jamarco Clark, who will be leaving UIS to serve as the next Vice President for Student Affairs at Wichita State University.
As interim vice chancellor, Dr. Johnson will be tasked with continuing the strong momentum Student Affairs has built over the past three years. During this period, the division has advanced several key initiatives focused on student belonging, engagement, wellness and success, while also strengthening partnerships across the university community. Dr. Johnson’s leadership and understanding of the division position him well to sustain this important work and continue supporting our students and staff at a high level.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Johnson on this appointment. I look forward to partnering with him as he leads the Division of Student Affairs during this transition period.
Sincerely,
Janet
Janet L. Gooch, Ph.D.
