Greetings! Here are some important updates and announcements from the UIS Office of Human Resources:

Supervisor Development Series

Human Resources is pleased to announce a new Supervisor Development Series, a semester-long series of trainings that will generally occur on the last Wednesday morning of each month. A tentative schedule is included below:

  • January 25: Workers' Compensation
  • February 22: Supervisor Boot Camp
  • March 29: Hiring Student/Grad Employees and Interns
  • April 26: Annual Evaluation Training

These sessions will begin at 9:00 am. Locations, speakers, and length of sessions TBA.

The purpose of this series is to allow supervisors a monthly opportunity to learn about topics pertinent to being an effective supervisor and to allow for conversation and collaboration between supervisors across campus. You do not need to commit to the entire series, but all supervisors are encouraged to attend as many sessions as their schedules will allow. The exact time and mode of delivery (in-person, Zoom, etc.) will be announced as we approach each session.

The first session in this series will be Workers’ Compensation and will be presented on January 25 from 9-10:30 am via Zoom by Brandi Clemens, a Claims Specialist with the Office of Claims Management and Workers’ Compensation. Here is the link to this session:

Job Descriptions Update

Thank you to everyone for uploading Academic Professional and Civil Service job descriptions into JDXpert this past December. We appreciate the campus-wide effort to complete this important task. Division Liaisons are currently reviewing the job descriptions and will be in touch if any edits need to be made prior to routing for final approval by the Supervisor and Director. Approved job descriptions will be sent to employees for their electronic signature. Signed job descriptions will then be available for future viewing and maintenance in JDXpert. If you have not yet uploaded a current job description for an Academic Professional or Civil Service employee in your unit, please do so as soon as possible.

Alternative Compensation

The Alternative Compensation Policy has been updated effective January 8, 2023.  This policy outlines the acceptable salary parameters for newly hired Civil Service employees and for Civil Service employees who receive a promotion to a higher level classification. It also provides guidelines for compensating staff who are assigned extra duties on a permanent or temporary basis and will now allow requests for increases greater than 7% for Civil Service employees to be considered on a case-by-case basis.  If you have any questions about the policy, please contact your Division Liaison.

Employment Verification

Did you know that you have access to provide your own official employment verification? Employees are commonly asked to provide employment verification information when dealing with vendors outside the University, such as a bank or lender when applying for a loan. The online Employment Verification System (EVS) provides almost immediate access to that information. You have the option of providing current or historical employment as well as current and historical earnings. If the business would rather get the information directly, you can create a Vendor Access Number (VAN) to allow that business to log in and view the level of information you allow. You can access the EVS system here: Access EVS.
