FAQ

FAQ: Undergraduate (Pre-licensure) Students

When I’m admitted to the Springfield campus, where will I attend class and clinical?

Nursing students have classes in various buildings on the UIS campus and in the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI).  Clinical courses take place in agencies located in Springfield or in surrounding communities. Transportation to clinical sites is the student’s responsibility. Public transportation is available through SMTD bus service.

Will I be required to go to Chicago as part of my nursing education?

Undergraduate students do not typically need to travel to Chicago for class or lab experiences. Clinical practicum experiences take place in Springfield and the surrounding communities.  Students from all regional campuses are encouraged to gather in Chicago for the white coat ceremony in the beginning of the junior year and to celebrate commencement.

Will my nursing degree be from UIS?

No. The College of Nursing on the Springfield Regional Campus is a regional program of the University of Illinois at Chicago, one of the top ranked schools of nursing in the country.  Your degree will be from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing (UIC CON).

If I’m part of UIC, where do my student fees go?

Tuition and college differential fees go to UIC.  However, when students register for the Springfield Regional Campus, their student fees are allocated to UIS. This allows Springfield students to have full access to the local services such as the library.

Is financial aid available for nursing students?

Yes. Financial Aid for nursing students is administered through the UIC Office of Student Financial Aid.  Students MUST fill out a FAFSA using UIC’s school code (001776) in order to obtain aid.

Can I begin my program in the College of Nursing before completing all of my prerequisite coursework?

No. You must have completed all required coursework (other than upper division) prior to beginning your nursing program.  You can, however apply to the CON after having completed 3 of 5 required science courses.  All prerequisites must be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to beginning the nursing program the next fall.
