AY26 Graduate Assistant Rates

FY27 rate increases will follow the campus salary program. When budgeting for multi-year projects an estimated inflation up to 5% is considered reasonable for years that are not yet available. These rates and requirements do NOT apply to hourly student employees.

Graduate Assistants are contracted for 20 hours per week during the academic year (9-months).

  • First-year GAs: $1,313.20/month ($11,818.20/year)
  • Second-year GAs: $1,413.20/month ($12,718.80/year)

Fringe costs are assessed on GA salary at a rate of 0.01%.

As part of their employment package, GAs receive a tuition waiver. They are eligible for up to 30 waived credits per academic year, however, actual waiver amounts vary by degree program. Because UIS does not have a tuition remission rate, the entire cost of the waiver must be paid on the grant (unless splitting the cost among other funds). Using Spring 2026 and Fall 2026 tuition rates, a GA with standard full time enrollment (9 hours each in Fall and Spring) in a program with no tuition differential would have the following annual waiver amounts budgeted:

  • Illinois Resident: $6,102 (the AY2027 rate is $6,408)
  • Non-Illinois Resident: $12,641 (the AY2027 rate is $13,271)

If you know that these estimates do not apply to your proposed student's degree program, use the UIS Tuition Calculator. Note that waivers apply only to tuition; GAs are responsible for other costs and fees.
