Enhancing a Cornerstone of Campus Life
The Public Affairs Center (PAC) is currently undergoing a multi-year infrastructure renovation project to update its aging plumbing systems and ensure its continued use as a vibrant space for academic learning, cultural events, and community engagement. The project began in June 2025 and will conclude by April 2027.
This state-funded initiative will improve water supply and sewer systems throughout the building, laying the foundation for future enhancements to the PAC, which is home to the UIS Performing Arts Center, Sangamon Auditorium, Studio Theatre, classrooms and campus offices.
The PAC is a valuable landmark for our campus, hosting performances, lectures, student events and academic courses. Upgrading its core infrastructure ensures that future generations of Prairie Stars will benefit from a modern, accessible and fully functional facility. This renovation is an investment in the future of UIS.

Timeline
The project timeline includes multiple phases of work across the two-year period.
- Project Started: June 2025 (following Spring 2025 Commencement)
- Major Closures Began: Summer 2025

Construction Implications
+
This project will require temporary closures and changes to how the PAC is accessed and used during construction.
Building Closures
- The Sangamon Auditorium, Studio Theatre, Sangamon Experience and Center for Lincoln Studies will be closed from June 2025 through September 2026.
- Ticketing offices and administrative spaces for the Performing Arts Center will remain open. Please call (217) 206-6160 for more details.

Bookstore Relocation
- The UIS Bookstore has relocated from PAC Room 1120 to Founders Residence Hall, Rooms 153/154, near the UIS Esports Arena.
- Updates will be shared when the bookstore is ready to return to PAC.
Campus Senate Office Relocation
- Sara Powell and the Campus Senate Office have temporarily relocated from PAC 383 to PAC 327 - classroom 3-C, starting August 4. Updates on when Campus Senate will resume operations in PAC 383 will be provided in the future.
Water Disruptions
- Restrooms in PAC Towers 1 and 2 currently have no water service.
- Tower 3 restrooms have been restored and are accessible with water during this time.
Building Access, Parking Changes and Elevator Usage
+
To support construction crews and ensure safety, certain areas of the building will be closed or rerouted, impacting access to various services:
- First-floor construction will limit access to some walkways and entrances due to equipment and excavation.
- In the event of an emergency, the lower level is still accessible as a storm shelter. Please use the UIS Disaster Plan Reference for guidance and sign up for the UIS-Alert Emergency Notification System.
- The main teardrop entrance to PAC will be closed to vehicle traffic and parking.
- SMTD bus service will move from PAC to the Founders Residence Hall stop at Eliza Farnham and Vachel Lindsay Drive.
- The Tower 1 and Tower 2 elevators in PAC should be used with caution by employees and students, as these are active construction areas. These elevators will be used by contractors for transporting materials. The Tower 3 elevator is also available for use during this time.
Impacted Campus Offices and Units
+
Offices located within PAC may experience brief service interruptions or temporary relocations during construction. Facilities & Services is working with affected units to minimize disruption and communicate relocation timelines in advance.
Planning for PAC Building Closure
Beginning Wednesday, May 13, the building will be closed as the project work shifts to replacing the water main, which requires full water shut-off to PAC. The closure may last up to four weeks. Individual units are coordinating alternative work arrangements for staff. Stay tuned for updates as we approach May.
