The Committee on Assurance of Student Learning will review UIS' experience with assessment of baccalaureate skills, assessment of general education, assessment of graduate education, and assessment in the major.
What is Assessment?
The following workshops provide information on the purpose, process, and training required for UIS program assessment. Programs may approach these workshops in different ways. For example, the workshops may be viewed by individual faculty or by the whole department. They may be viewed at once in their entirety or individually over a period of time. However your program chooses to view the workshop modules, it is important that you get together to discuss each module in order to determine how it might be used to strengthen and improve your assessment process.
If, after viewing the workshops, or at any time in the assessment process, your program would like a follow-up session with a CASL member, simply contact the chair of CASL.

History
History & Resolutions
The Campus Senate Committee on Assurance of Student Learning(CASL) grew from the Assessment Task Force. In the fall of 2001, Provost Michael Cheney established the Assessment Task Force (ATF) to review UIS’ assessment processes and to recommend changes for improvement. He appointed Harry Berman, associate vice chancellor for academic planning, and Bill Bloemer, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as co-chairs. Members were selected from the four colleges, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Assessment Office. The first meeting was held on November 30, 2001, during which the charge to the Task Force was approved.
Assessment Task Force Charge
The Assessment Task Force was charged with reviewing UIS’ experience with assessment of baccalaureate skills, assessment of general education, assessment of graduate education, and assessment in the major. The Task Force recommended policy and structural changes to make assessment more useful to the campus, both for improvement of curricula and for communication with external audiences.

Assurance of Student Learning Day
UIS fulfills its mission and realizes its vision by promoting a culture of continuous improvement and maintains accreditation by engaging in regular and systematic assessment of student learning. Evidence of student learning is documented by establishing student learning outcomes, creating assessment plans, implementing those plans to measure student learning, with programmatic decisions based on the resulting aggregated data. Finally, student strengths and areas for improvement are assessed and strategies identified to promote student learning.
The Campus Senate Committee on the Assurance of Student Learning(CASL) is responsible for reviewing UIS’ experience with assessment of baccalaureate skills, assessment of general education, assessment of graduate education, and assessment in the major.
The annual Assurance of Student Learning Day (ASLD) workshop is held in each Spring semester.
