Dr. Queen Meccasia Zabriskie

The Institute was delighted to cohost Dr. Queen Meccasia Zabriskie for her lecture/performance "Walking Proudly: Embodying Liberation Capital in Chicago's West African Dance and Drum Communities" as part of Spring 2024’s ECCE series and Black History Month. Dr. Zabriskie blended performance (quilting, song, dance) and audience participation (power poses!) seamlessly with her sociological account of the impactful history of West African dance and drum traditions in Chicago’s Black community from the 1960s forward.

Dr. Zabriskie illustrated how West African drumming and dancing allows for people to celebrate where they come from and gain more identity from doing so.
