What is Necessary Steps?
The Necessary Steps Mentoring program (NSMP) is a Living Learning Community that is designed to transition first-generation students to the challenges and demands of college life. First-generation is defined as students whose parents/guardians have not graduated from a four year college or institution. Necessary Steps is intended to assist in the transition from high school to college, as well as, transforming our students into scholars.

Advantages of Joining Necessary Steps:
- Be paired with an experienced NSMP student who will serve as your mentor, friend, and confidant
- Receive support in navigating college life and adjusting to UIS
- Build lasting relationships within a supportive community
- Live on the same residence hall floor as other NSMP students during your first two years
- Gain access to tailored resources and guidance throughout your academic journey
Student Testimony
This years' experience attending weekly meetings with Necessary Steps has been great. Me being a first-generation student, I didn't know how to start my college journey. Ever since I came to these meetings, I was able to get a grasp on college, the many opportunities that I have here at UIS, and ways to become successful not just as a student, but as a person in general. I've learned that you're not alone and there will always be someone or something there to give you a helping hand. I encourage you all to think about what you want out of your college journey here. As well as what it means to be a First-Generation student. That is all, I hope you all consider applying to Necessary Steps!
