The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Pre-Medical Concentration is an optional 21-credit hour program designed for MLS majors planning to apply to medical or professional schools. Completing the concentration is not required for medical school, but it will appear on your transcript.
Program Overview
The B.S. in Medical Laboratory Science is a 120-credit hour degree with two phases. To complete the Pre-Medical Concentration, you will take courses in addition to MLS major and prerequisite courses during the pre-professional phase:
1. Pre-Professional Phase (Years 1-2)
- Complete general education and MLS prerequisites
- Take specialized pre-medical courses, which can be customized if you plan on attending a specific medical school
- Apply for admission to the Professional Phase via a secondary admissions process
2. Professional Phase (Years 3-4)
- NAACLS-accredited curriculum
- Complete core MLS courses and clinical rotations
- Graduates are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) exam (Route 1)
The Professional Phase and core MLS requirements are identical, with the Pre-Medical Concentration adding specialized courses. Our incredible MLS Academic and Faculty Advisors have developed a recommended course sequence and will work with you to stay on track!

Submit required statements/writing sample
If you are a first-year student, a statement of 250-650 words is required for admission. We want to hear about your professional aspirations, intellectual interests, and personal experiences relevant to your choice of a specific academic program. You can upload the required documents on your application status page.
Pay your application fee
You can submit your non-refundable application fee online, after completing the online application. Alternately, it can also be mailed to the university, payable to University of Illinois Springfield.
Domestic students: Undergraduate - $50, Graduate - $60;
International students: Undergraduate - $60, Graduate - $75.
