Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC)

Chapters in the Inter-Fraternity Council conduct an informal recruitment process throughout the year. This is a mutual selection process that requires interested members to attend fraternity sponsored recruitment events at the beginning of each semester. These events may sometimes include Smokers (formal information sessions), where brothers and alumni discuss the unique aspects of their fraternity and share personal experiences with prospective members.

Recruitment or membership intake is a mutual selection process for joining a fraternity or sorority. It is a time for parents and aspiring students to ask questions, define financial obligations, time commitments and membership requirements.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. The council promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.

Each National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternity and sorority brings in new members at various times of the year through a process called Membership Intake. All organizations governed by the National Pan- Hellenic Council have different requirements for membership.  When organizations are looking to conduct Membership Intake, many of them will host an informational meeting in which the criteria for membership are explained.  NPHC will host a general informational about all of its organizations for students who have questions or are unsure about the intake process.

Typically, a student must obtain a collegiate GPA of 2.5 or higher, community service experience, and involvement in clubs or community activities. Each NPHC organization has its own requirements set by their inter/national organization and UIS chapter.
