Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Today marks the 56th first day of classes since our university welcomed its first students in 1970. While a lot has changed in that time, UIS continues to deliver on its promise of providing an excellent educational experience, both in and out of the classroom, for every learner. 

Whether you are conducting research with a faculty mentor, participating in a student organization, serving as an intern or preparing for your next career step, UIS offers countless opportunities for growth and transformation, and I can’t wait to see the year unfold!

To our students, I encourage you to make the most of your time at UIS. Get to know your professors, ask questions, get involved and take advantage of the many resources and opportunities available to you. Whether you are new to UIS or returning for another semester, our faculty and staff are here to support you as you work toward your academic goals.

To our faculty and staff, I am so grateful for the important work you do to help our students learn and grow and for the many ways you keep our university moving forward. Every class session, every active learning experience, every problem solved behind the scenes helps create the experience our students deserve.

My hope for this year is that we continue to strengthen the sense of community that makes UIS special. No matter your role or background, you belong at UIS. I want everyone to feel welcomed and valued as part of our university community.

As the semester gets underway, I encourage everyone to stay engaged and make the most of everything UIS has to offer. If you’re on campus, a great way to start is by participating in our Welcome Week events. I look forward to seeing you on the quad today for our Prairie Star Kick-Off Celebration!
