The Illinois Springfield women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Truman State on Sunday afternoon in Kirksville, Mo. The Prairie Stars hold steady with a 1-2-2 overall record, and now hold a 0-1-1 GLVC mark.
Game Recap
The opening half was a tactical stalemate, with both sides creating a handful of chances but unable to convert. UIS goalkeeper Gigi Yurevich earned the start and kept the Bulldogs off the board in the first period.
Truman struck first after the break, converting a penalty kick following a foul in the box. The Prairie Stars responded quickly, as Abbie Gleason's corner kick skipped past the initial group of players and found Kalli Drexler, who drove a shot high into the right side of the net to level the match.
Momentum built for UIS in the closing stretch, particularly after Truman was forced to make a goalkeeper change due to injury. Addison Wittenburg nearly gave the Stars the go-ahead goal, but her attempt was stopped by the new keeper.
Neither team was able to break the deadlock the rest of the way. Yurevich finished with one save, while Drexler and Wittenburg each recorded two shots. UIS tallied five total shots, putting three on frame compared to Truman's two on goal from eight attempts. Both sides earned three corners, while Truman was issued the match's lone yellow card.
"I thought it was a really good fight from our team today," head coach Scott Myers said. "We're creating some great chances, and once we learn to finish them, we'll be on the front foot a bit more. I'm very proud of the team for achieving our second-half goals for the game. Credit to Truman as well, they did a great job executing their game plan and making things challenging for us."
