Can you give a brief timeline of how your career led you to UIS?

My first teaching position was as a graduate assistant at the University of Kentucky, where I taught for six years while completing my master's and doctoral degrees. During that time, I also coached the university's speech and debate program. In 2018, I joined UIS as an instructor in my first full-time faculty role. After serving in two different positions at the university, I applied for a tenure-track opportunity when it became available and was hired into my current role. I am excited to continue contributing to UIS as an assistant professor and to be part of the university's future!

What's your go-to productivity hack?

I am a big believer in a two-tiered to-do list system. At the beginning of each semester, I create master task lists for the major areas of my professional life, including teaching, research and service. Then, each week, I use those larger lists to build a more focused weekly action plan. At the end of the week, I review my progress, check off completed items and update the semester-long lists. This approach helps me break large projects into manageable steps, stay organized and keep sight of both short-term priorities and long-term goals.

Do you have any side projects or personal goals you are working on?

I am currently getting back into running, which was something I loved as a kid but had not done much as an adult. This fall, I have signed up for two 5K races, including the Prairie Stars 5K, so I have been spending the past few months building my endurance and consistency. I am excited to see how I do. I'm also looking forward to one of the best post-race rewards: the pancake breakfast at UIS!

Where have you lived or traveled?

One of my current travel goals is to visit all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, with a special focus on exploring America's national parks. So far, I have visited 49 states, Washington, D.C. and 34 of the country's 63 national parks. Alaska and Puerto Rico are the final destinations on my list, though there are plenty of places I would love to revisit. Looking ahead, I would also like to begin traveling internationally.

Is there a book, movie, or TV show that you recently watched and liked?

One of the most recent shows I watched and really enjoyed was Last Twilight. The series follows two individuals whose lives intersect during difficult circumstances: one is gradually losing his vision, while the other is struggling financially. As they navigate life's challenges together, they form a deep connection and eventually fall in love. It is a thoughtful, heartfelt story that I found both moving and memorable.
