How do you show CARE in your day-to-day work at UIS?
In my daily work, I strive to lead with empathy by giving people the time and space to share their questions, concerns and experiences. After experiencing the support of my colleagues during a difficult season in my life, I became more intentional about being a better listener when answering phone calls, responding to emails or interacting with alumni, prospective students and community members. I have also pursued professional development in active listening and psychological safety to strengthen my ability to create meaningful, supportive interactions for everyone I serve.
Why I CARE
My perspective changed in 2025 when my dad passed away. During that time, my co-workers showed me incredible compassion by supporting me, attending the visitation and giving me the grace to pause, reflect and share memories as I navigated my grief. Experiencing that level of care made me more aware of the unseen challenges others may be carrying, including the students we serve at UIS. It inspired me to take the care I received and extend it to others, ensuring they feel heard, respected and supported.
What is CARE?
CARE, our foundation for working with others, guides UIS employees to foster a student-centered experience where every individual feels valued, supported and connected. This framework reinforces our Prairie Star commitment to academic and community excellence through integrity, respect and empathy, embedded into daily interactions.
