Dr. Madrigal joined the School of Integrated Sciences, Sustainability, and Public Health in the College of Health, Science, and Technology at the University of Illinois Springfield in August 2025. She received her Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health. Most recently Dr. Madrigal was an Investigator and Independent Research Scholar in the Intramural Research Program of the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health. Over the last decade, Dr. Madrigal has developed a research program focused on identifying inequities in exposure to environmental contaminants (e.g., industrial pollution, organochlorine pesticides, metals) and the investigation of these agents as etiologic risk factors for cancer, cardiovascular and kidney disease, and asthma among adults and children. She has collaborated with clinical and community partners on numerous studies including an evaluation of HPV vaccination uptake among young adults in Chicago; the development of clinic- and community-based interventions to increase cancer screening; and the evaluation of neighborhood-level factors with risk of chronic diseases among adults and children. At UIS Dr. Madrigal leads the Prairie Stars for Public Health research group and is excited to develop innovative, cross-disciplinary, and meaningful research and education to enhance the well-being of residents across Illinois. Her goal at UIS is to train the next generation of medical professionals and public health leaders while fostering a culture of research excellence, strengthening the college¿s research portfolio, and ensuring integration of research with the educational mission of UIS and regional clinical partners. Dr. Madrigal holds joint appointments at the UIC School of Public Health and UI Health with the Mile Square Health Center.
