Dear UIS Community:
You may be aware that the University has been negotiating successor contracts with the labor unions that represent tenured and tenure-track faculty and clerical, service and technical employees. The negotiations are ongoing, and future negotiation sessions have been scheduled.
Unfortunately, the University has been informed that these unions have filed a Notice of Intent to Strike as early as March 30. This does not mean a strike will occur, and from the University’s perspective, a strike is not warranted. The University has presented proposals that represent fiscally responsible successor contracts, especially given our current financial standing. A strike would not change the constraints that limit what the University can ultimately provide in a new contract given the current fiscal situation.
We respect our union colleagues and remain committed to working together to reach an agreement that serves the best interests of the entire university community.
While we are disappointed with their decision to potentially engage in a work stoppage, the University is prepared for this possibility. Please visit our Bargaining website dedicated to keeping all parties informed of the negotiation processes and potential impacts. Carefully review the FAQs regarding questions you may have about classes, operations or whom to contact.
