Free Tax Preparation Assistance
The University of Illinois Springfield participates in the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide free, high-quality tax preparation services to eligible individuals in our community.
Trained and IRS-certified volunteers assist with preparing federal and state income tax returns at no cost.

Who Is Eligible?
The IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation for individuals who need assistance filing their own returns, including:
- People who generally make $67,000 or less
- People with disabilities
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers

What to Bring to Your Appointment
To ensure accurate and efficient tax preparation, please bring:
- All W-2 and 1099 forms
- Social Security Cards or ITINs for all family members
- Valid photo identification for taxpayer and spouse
- If filing jointly, both spouses must be present
- A copy of your prior-year tax return
- Recent IRS letters, such as:
- Letter 6419 (Advance Child Tax Credit)
- Documentation of your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) if applicable
- 1098 forms or real estate tax receipts
- Proof of unemployment compensation, if applicable
- A voided check or bank account/routing number for direct deposit
- Proof of childcare expenses
- Parcel number (Illinois homeowners only)
- Forms 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C (Health Coverage Statements)
