What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have ever received is to always ask “why.” Whether asked literally or figuratively, that question helps create clarity and perspective, challenges the status quo, encourages creativity and supports independent thinking.
I have often been told that I march to the beat of my own drum, and I do not see that changing. I encourage my team to ask that same question of me whenever the opportunity arises. I welcome their curiosity because seeing the "light bulb moments" when they learn something new or get to think about something in a different way is one of the most wonderful exchanges to be part of! As my team learns from me, I also have the honor of learning from them.
What do you like about your job?
One of the things I enjoy most about my job is that it allows me to incorporate so many of my interests. No two days are the same, which gives me the opportunity to be creative, solve problems, learn new things and meet new people. Having such a dynamic role keeps me engaged, energized and, at times, a little bit silly.
What did you like to do growing up?
Growing up, I liked to volunteer, do jigsaw puzzles, learn about new things, and create whatever form of art I could get my hands on. All of these are still very much part of my life, and in them I find great joy. The only difference between then and now is that I practice much more restraint with glitter!
Do most consider you a morning bird or a night owl?
I love this question because my answer often draws a few puzzled looks. I am neither a morning person nor a night owl. I usually respond by saying, “I’m not really an awake type of person.” I have two sleep disorders, one of which is narcolepsy, a chronic neurological condition.
Living with narcolepsy certainly keeps things interesting. While there is no cure, I am grateful for the advances in modern medicine that help me navigate daily life as effectively as possible.
