What was your overall UIS experience like?
The knowledge and skills I gained at UIS were instrumental in advancing my career. Thanks to the hands-on experience I had during my studies, I was able to advance my leadership roles with confidence and a solid foundation.
Do you have any fond memories of your time at UIS you'd like to share?
I was able to gain my Chief School Business Official (CSBO) endorsement through the state board of education and it was a great experience and one that I will share with other professionals throughout the state.
Why did you choose UIS?
The program at UIS really fit the needs of what I was looking for. At the time, I was a high school principal so being able to work remotely on my time was really a benefit of the UIS program. Through gaining the skills of the CSBO through UIS I have achieved the Illinois Principal Association (IPA) Principal of the Year for the Cornbelt Region. I was also promoted to the superintendent position at Donovan CUSD #3. I am thankful that UIS has helped me throughout the process.
What has your career path been like? How did you end up where you are?
I have been very fortunate throughout my career. I have been able to connect with influential leaders throughout the state of Illinois
How did your UIS education prepare you for your career?
It has made me a better administrator and more confident in my role. I have added many skills that have allowed me to progress in my career.
Do you have any cool hobbies/side projects you'd like to tell us about?
I used to own a small business www.J3Timing.com where I would go out and time 5k run/walks over the weekend. We built the business up to 325 races per year and were sending out 10-15 timing teams each weekend. I got too busy with administration in school and sold my half of the business back to my brother who I started it with.
What are some life lessons you'd like to share with current students?
Balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal life can be overwhelming. Learning how to manage your time effectively will make a huge difference in your stress levels and success. Make sure to take time for yourself and your family. Make sure to embrace failure. Fear of failure can be paralyzing, but remember that failing doesn’t mean you’ve lost it means you’ve learned. Every successful person has faced failure at some point, and it’s often the best teacher.
