The Therkildsen Field Station at Emiquon (TFSE) provides a variety of opportunities for formal and informal educators and adult lifelong learners to strengthen their skillset and enhance their teaching of environmental science by incorporating engaging hands-on activities to their lesson plans and programs.

Educator Workshops

Participate in an environmental education professional development workshop at the UIS-Therkildsen Field Station, located within the Nature Conservancy’s Emiquon Preserve. The half-day workshops will provide information and resources for Project WET (PWET), Project Learning Tree (PLT), and Project Wild’s Growing up Wild. Learn a variety of methods and activities to enhance the teaching of science to youth and how to effectively add engaging hands-on activities to lesson plans and programs.

State of Illinois licensed teachers may earn certified professional development units. Informal educators, including youth and scout group leaders, nature center educators, children’s librarians, and Master Naturalists, are also encouraged to attend.

These are national programs designed to offer multi-disciplinary, hands-on activities for all grade levels that are correlated with state and national academic standards, including early childhood standards from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the North American Association of Environmental Educators (NAAEE) as well as Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, and the C3 Framework.

Workshops are free, but advanced registration is required. Participants will receive a personal copy of the activity guides, a certificate of completion, and ISBE credits if applicable.
