The University of Illinois Springfield will host a groundbreaking for its Library Commons building at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 19 on the UIS quad, near the Student Union.

The Library Commons is a publicly funded project made possible by a $42.5 million investment from the State of Illinois. The three-story, 52,000-square-foot building will be located between the Student Union and the Health Sciences Building on the UIS quad.

The facility will bring together the library, academic and advising support, career development and technical support in one convenient location. It is designed to better meet the needs of today’s students by combining essential services in a single, accessible space. Features will include a variety of study areas for both group and individual use, computer stations, open seating that encourages collaboration and a flexible classroom with more than 100 seats.

The layout will help students easily find what they need, with services grouped together in a clear, easy-to-navigate design. The building will be energy efficient and constructed to meet LEED Gold certification standards.

UIS expects the Library Commons to open in fall 2027. The project is being managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board.
