Professor Piotr (Peter) Bołtuć recently gave a presentation at the 2022 Annual International Conference on Brain-Inspired Cognitive Architectures for Artificial Intelligence (BICA*AI 2022), held at Guadalajara, Mexico, September 22-25. In his presentation ‘Beyond Industry 4.0, but not too far,’ Professor Bołtuć discussed an emerging and novel category that goes beyond the 4th Revolution of Luciano Floridi and others. In addition, he chaired a discussion panel with Stephen Thaler, M. Marchewka, Rafał Maciąg, and Howard Schneider on “Beyond Industry 4.0: Biologically Inspired AI that makes it possible.”

Professor Bołtuć is full professor at UIS, Associated faculty of UIS Computer Science Department, University Professor of the Warsaw School of Economics, Erskine Scholar in Philosophy at University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NZ. In addition, he was the Shewe Endowed Professor at UIS from 2013-2016.

Professor Bołtuć was also a speaker at the ‘AGI-22: The 15th Conference on Artificial General Intelligence Seattle, WA, United States, August 19-22, 2022. In his paper he developed Ben Goertzel’s idea on the role of paraconsistent logic in advanced AGI. In his paper ‘Moral Space for Paraconsistent AGI,’ Bołtuć focused on the concept of non-homogenous moral space, which he developed and published a decade ago. In July and August 2022 Professor Bołtuć gave three lectures for faculty and Ph.D. students at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Those are: Paradigms in Digital Transformation; Non-Homogenous Moral Space, and Non-Reductive Naturalism. The latter was based on his article, ‘Non-Reductive Physicalism for AGI’ published (open access) in June 2022 at the Polish Academy of Science.

Professor Bołtuć is interested in a wide range of areas in philosophy, including specialization in the philosophy of AI and machine consciousness. For more information about his research, teaching, service and achievements, see his website or the UIS directory
The UIS Math department and the Philosophy department are now one unit (MAT/PHI) as a result of our recent Reorganization. We are pulling together the talents from both departments to offer exciting learning and educational opportunities for all students. Feel free to contact us (Hei-Chi Chan and John Barker)--we love to hear from you!
