Virtual Book Club: Chicanas of 18th Street

This month, join us at your own pace as we read and discuss the stories of six female activists from Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Chicanas of 18th Street reveals how education, immigration, culture, and identity shaped the Chicano movement of the 1960s–70s, highlighting resilience, reform, and solidarity across communities.

Each week, we’ll post a new discussion question to guide our conversations.
The book is available free to UIS students as an eBook (unlimited access), a print copy, or through the I-Share system.

At the end of the month, we’ll share a recorded panel discussion from 2013: Chicanas of 18th Street: Women Community Activism from Latina Chicago. This Hispanic Heritage Month event featured the women activists highlighted in the book, along with Leonard Ramirez, who chronicled their stories.
