Men's Basketball Holds Off St. Xavier 89-85

Jacob Motteler led UIS with 16 points.

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Prairie Stars men's basketball team has fallen into a pattern in the early part of the season - start strong, build a lead and then let the team that has been dominated try to get back into the game.  UIS did just that in an 89-85 non-conference win over the Cougars of St. Xavier University.  The win gives the Prairie Stars a 7-0 overall record.

In the first nine minutes of the contest, the teams exchanged the lead four times.  With 10:49 left in the first half, UIS took a two point lead on a made jump shot by Jacob Motteler that was developed into a 14 point lead at halftime.  The Prairie Stars capitalized on St. Xavier turnovers, scoring 13 points, and the bench came up big, scoring 29 points.  UIS went into the locker room with a 52-38 advantage. -more-

Turnovers Cost Women's Team

Jeanell Randolph scores her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

(Davenport, IA) - The Prairie Stars committed 35 turnovers in a 68-52 non-conference loss to St. Ambrose University.  The Fighting Bees are ranked No. 12 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II National Pre-Season Poll.  The loss gives UIS a 1-5 overall record.

"We played hard and it was a tough loss," said Head Coach Roy Gilmore.  "We got some good looks at the basket but the ball wouldn't fall for us.  Of course, we have to take much better care of the basketball and cut down on the turnovers." -more-

Men Win Viterbo Pepsi Invitational with 64-52 Win

Richard Oruche was named the Viterbo Pepsi Invitational Most Valuable Player.

(LaCrosse, WI) - The Prairie Stars men's basketball team made up a nine point deficit in the first half of play and then used a smothering defense to bring home a 64-52 win over the host school Viterbo University.  It marks the first time in men's basketball school history that the Prairie Stars have won a weekend invitational tournament.  UIS nows sits with a 6-0 overall season record.

Viterbo dominated UIS in the first half of play and held a nine point lead with 5:09 remaining in the first half.  Viterbo's Eric Ambrose was nearly unstoppable, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field, three of those from behind the arc, for a total of 17 points in the first half.  The Prairie Stars battled back, cutting the Viterbo lead to a one point advantage at halftime, 31-30.  -more-

Prairie Stars Capture First Season Win Over Calumet College, 83-50

Tiffany Sproat led all scorers with 15 points.

SPRINGFIELD, IL - In the last game of the Baymont Inn and Suites Classic, the Prairie Stars women's basketball team exploded into a lead and never looked back in the 83-50 non-conference win.  The victory gives UIS a 1-4 overall record.

Erin Staley opened the scoring with a made three pointer in the first two minutes of the contest and the Prairie Stars built the lead from there.  Calumet College got to within a point of the Prairie Stars at the 15:13 mark, but then Staley found the bottom of the net from three-point land and was followed by teammate Alex Blair with another three to put UIS up by seven points.  The Prairie Stars then went on a 13-2 run in the last seven minutes of the first half to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. -more-
