I attended UIS as a graduate student from 2001-2004, while also teaching full time at Athens Middle School.
Do you have any fond memories of your time at UIS you'd like to share?
During my time at UIS, I was able to form great relationships with my professors and fellow classmates.
Why did you choose UIS?
It was conveniently located in Central Illinois. The program allowed me to work full time and attend class in the evening.
What has your career path been like? How did you end up where you are?
I graduated from Illinois College in 2000 with a degree in Elementary Education. I started my career as a seventh grade teacher at Athens Middle School in Athens, IL. I began taking graduate classes at UIS in the Educational Leadership program while also teaching full time. In 2008, I became the principal at Cantrall Intermediate School, part of the Athens School District. In 2014, I took over as the principal at Riverton Elementary School. I am still in this position today.
While working as a principal, I have been an active member of the Illinois Principals Association. I have served on the Abe Lincoln Region Board as the Awards Chair, Region Director, and State Director. I am currently in the State Director role.
How did your UIS education prepare you for your career?
The coursework and clinical experience I received while at UIS gave me the tools to be an effective administrator.
Do you have any cool hobbies/side projects you'd like to tell us about?
I have three children - 19 year old twins, Blake and Isabelle, and 15 year old Gavin. My favorite past time has been watching them participate in their various activities - basketball, golf, track, and cheerleading. Now that the twins are in college at Illinois College and the University of Missouri, I enjoy visiting them!
What are some life lessons you'd like to share with current students?
Soak it all in and enjoy the time! Take every opportunity to immerse yourself into your field - especially as an education major. Get yourself into classrooms, spend time around students, and learn from great teachers.
