What was your overall UIS experience like?
My experience at UIS fostered an environment where I could stay deeply focused on both professional and personal growth. The close-knit campus community, intimate class sizes, and supportive faculty created a space where I could truly invest in myself and my future. During my time there, I came to understand that determination, discipline, and service to others are essential, fulfilling, and deeply rewarding.
Do you have any fond memories of your time at UIS you'd like to share?
One of my fondest memories at UIS was the opportunity to meet and connect with people from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. The diversity within the UIS community exposed me to new ideas and ways of thinking that helped me grow both personally and professionally. I was fortunate to build meaningful relationships with individuals who challenged and inspired me—and some made such a lasting impression that I still consider them mentors to this day.
Why did you choose UIS?
I chose UIS because it offered a unique combination of academic excellence and practical, real-world experience that truly set it apart from other graduate programs. The Graduate Public Service Internship Program was a major factor in my decision, as it provided the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public service while pursuing my degree. This program not only allowed me to apply what I was learning in the classroom to real-world challenges but also connected me with invaluable professional networks in the public sector.
Additionally, the university’s emphasis on public administration and communication, along with its supportive and collaborative campus culture, made UIS the ideal place for me to grow both personally and professionally. The smaller class sizes and close-knit community fostered meaningful relationships with professors and peers, helping me refine my leadership skills and build a strong foundation for my career.
What has your career path been like? How did you end up where you are?
My career has been rooted in public service, strategic communication, and building meaningful partnerships across sectors. I started in the Illinois State Senate, where I developed a strong foundation in policy and constituent engagement. From there, I took on roles in event coordination and campaign leadership on a presidential campaign, where I led organizing efforts across multiple states and helped flip key regions.
My work at the US Small Business Administration further deepened my experience in executive communications, policy, stakeholder strategy, and managing large-scale federal initiatives to support small businesses nationwide.
Now, as a Fractional Senior Strategist of Policy, AI, and Stewardship at Breakthrough Mavens, LLC, I help mission-driven organizations navigate complex policy landscapes and integrate emerging technologies with purpose and equity at the core. My journey has been guided by a commitment to impact, collaboration, and continuous learning.

What are some life lessons you'd like to share with current students?
One of the most important life lessons I’ve learned is the value of persistence and embracing challenges. During my time at UIS and beyond, I’ve found that growth often happens in moments of discomfort—when you step outside your comfort zone and push through obstacles. Don’t be afraid to fail or encounter setbacks; they are part of the process and often the greatest teachers.
Another lesson is the importance of building relationships and networking. Whether it’s with professors, classmates, or professionals in your field, the connections you make can open doors and provide invaluable guidance. These relationships are not just about immediate opportunities, but about long-term support and mentorship that can shape your career and life.
Lastly, always stay curious and invest in your personal development. Academics are important, but the world is constantly changing, and staying adaptable is key. Be open to new ideas, seek out experiences that challenge your perspective, and never stop learning—not just in the classroom, but in life.
