The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team won a high-scoring game to start the series against Missouri S&T on Thursday afternoon. The Prairie Stars move to 15-11 on the year and 6-7 in the GLVC. The Miners drop to 14-12 on the season and 5-8 in conference play. 

The GLVC foes combined for 15 home runs on 48 hits in the series opener with the wind in their favor. UIS had 25 hits for its second-most hits in a game in program history. The Prairie Stars also hit seven home runs, something the Prairie Stars have done just four other times since the beginning of the program.

Game Summary

  • S&T took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a three-run home run

  • The Miners increased their lead to 7-0 in the second with two more homers and an RBI single

  • TJ Yakimisky hit into a fielder's choice, earning an RBI on a throwing error by the second baseman to make it 7-1

  • The Miners increased their lead to 10-1 in the third

  • S&T hit another home run in the fourth to go up 12-1

  • UIS began their comeback in the fourth behind a three-run home run from Noah Caceres and a two-run homer from Brant Vanaman to cut the lead to 12-6

  • The Miners hit a home run in the fifth to make it 13-6

  • UIS took a lead in the bottom of the fifth behind home runs from Johnny Colombo, Brant Vanaman, and Mack Clark

  • Ivan Dahlberg hit an RBI double in the fifth

  • S&T took the lead back in the sixth

  • The Stars retook the lead, 16-15, on runs scored from Jacyk Uehling and Ivan Dahlberg in the bottom of the sixth

  • The Miners went up 18-16 in the seventh

  • UIS took the lead back in the bottom of the inning with a home run from Johnny Wendling and runs from a wild pitch and an error

  • Missouri S&T hit a two-run homer in the eighth to tie the game 20-20

  • Noah Caceres hit his second home run of the day in the bottom of the eighth to make it 23-20 Stars

  • S&T scored four runs in the ninth to take a 24-23 lead
  • Charlie Jackson entered to pitch, striking out a pinch hitter to stop the Miners' offensive charge. The clutch single-strikeout appearance would earn him the win
  • Brant Vanaman was able to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game again

  • With the bases loaded and the game tied, Johnny Colombo hit a deep fly ball to center field and Mack Clark was able to come home for the game's winning run
