Welcome to the Office of
International Student Services

The Office of International Student Services supports and
enhances the academic, cultural, and social experience of all
UIS international students. We provide programs and services
that are culturally sensitive and of the highest quality. The
OISS is the primary liaison between our international students
and the university, the community, and the US government.
OISS programs and services
include:

Advising
international students regarding personal, social, academic,
and immigration concerns

Promoting
understanding of and compliance with federal immigration
regulations and university policies

Keeping
international students apprised of upcoming events of
particular interest to them

Assisting the
Office of Admissions with the recruitment of a diverse
international student population
-
Providing
International Student Orientation programs and workshops on
employment issues, taxes, cultural adjustment, reentry, and
other topics
-
Cooperating with
the International Student Association on issues of
importance to all international students (the ISA is
comprised of all UIS international students)

Collaborating with
other UIS departments to promote cross-cultural
understanding and to provide the best service possible to
our international students

Fall 2008
International Students should plan to arrive no later than
August 19th in order to participate in orientation on
the morning of August 19th at 9:30 a.m. at HRB 112.

The ESL (English as a Second
Language) department offers year-round courses for
undergraduate and graduate students at the high intermediate
and advanced levels. They offer classes in Reading, Writing,
and Speaking, as well as English for Specific Purposes. This
year they are pleased to announce an intensive summer
program (ISPEL) which integrates building English language
skills with developing a great understanding and involvement
in U.S. culture. For more information visit:

Please note:
The application
and admissions process for international students is handled
by the Office of Admissions (see: http://www.uis.edu/admissions/index.html).
That office also issues the initial form I-20 (Certificate
of Eligibility for the Non-immigrant Student Visa). An
Admissions officer will contact you if she needs additional
information. You will also be contacted as soon as the
process is complete.
