Over the past 10 to 15 years, qualitative research methods are becoming an integral part of faculty and student scholarly exploration and research. This symposium adds credibility to furthering the development and use of sumethodology. The symposium not only provides an opportunity for learning but also one for sharing and potentially collaboration amongst UIS and Central Illinoisfaculty and students. In an effort to attract not only faculty but also students, this Qualitative Research Symposium will be free tostudents and Faculty. This Symposium will also align with the UIS strategic plan objectives of collaboration amongst the CentralIllinios scholarly community.

Will describe the main principles of qualitative research. Compare the differences between qualitative and quantitative paradigms. Overview several strategies of qualitative inquiry. Discuss in depth issues of trustworthiness.
Dr. Nithyakala Karuppaswamy, PhD and Yolanda Six, MA
Based on two qualitative research projects completed to : 1. Study the identity development of Asian Indian women as a result of cross-cultural contact. 2. Explore the influencing factors and conceptualization of sexuality in college students. Both researchers will demonstrate how using these multiple methods of data collection helped them access information on the meaningful and subtle elements of the cultural and systemic contexts of the research participants world and sense of self - self as an Asian Indian woman or a sense of who one is sexually. Both projects used multiple research data collection processes. These included: Semi- structured interviews, Semi-projective psychological assessment, Use of metaphors to elicit meaning, Use of focus group.

Using video and transcripts as our data, will lead participants in a close analysis of an operation and the interactions among the surgeons during that operation. Will lead an interactive session discussing how they approach the data from the perspective of Conversation Analysis and Grounded Theory.
