UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT SPRINGFIELD

Public Affairs Reporting (M.A.)

A Note From the Director...

Dear Visitor,

Let me introduce you to a unique graduate journalism program--Public Affairs Reporting--offered here at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

In the 40 credit hour, one-year program, students combine academics and hands-on experience in the Illinois Statehouse press corps to earn a Master's degree and to gain a solid professional background for a career covering government and politics.

The program begins in late August and concludes the following July. During the fall semester, students take 18 hours of academic work and prepare for the intensive, six-month internship.

Starting in January, students are assigned to one of 18 bureaus--12 print and 6 broadcast--in the State Capitol pressroom, where they work beside a seasoned journalist covering the spring session of the Illinois General Assembly and other news of state government and politics. During the internship, students receive a $500 monthly stipend ($3,000 total) and their tuition is waived.

We're looking for students who are good writers, have a good academic record, are interested in covering news of government and politics, and are motivated toward a career in journalism.

If the PAR program sounds like what YOU'RE looking for, applications for next fall's class are due by April 1.

Sincerely,

Charles N. Wheeler III
Director
