THE KEYNOTE
Toward Symbolism: Gustave Moreau and the Masters of the Past and his Contemporaries - Madame Lacambre
Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) had a solid foundation in classical culture and was perceived by many as a history painter. When he treats traditional historical subjects or from Biblical or mythological subjects, he avoids narrative and stresses composition of his work-- color, movement and the expression of the characters he paints, and, importantly, the ideas that he cherishes. It is interesting to compare the treatment of similar subjects by Moreau and by different artists of the past. With help of specific examples, I will show how Moreau is different from earlier painters and how he introduces and develops purely symbolist iconography. Read more about Geneviève Lacambre
