UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Reverent/Irreverent”September 21, 2005
SPRINGFIELD – “Reverent/Irreverent,” works by Colorado artist Brian DeLevie, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from October 6 through 27. The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Thursday, October 6, beginning with an artist’s talk at 5:30 p.m. followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public. DeLevie is a digital artist, experimental filmmaker, and writer, as well as assistant professor of multimedia at the University of Colorado at Denver. His work has been shown nationally and internationally in such venues as the Thailand Media Arts Festival 2004; VI Salon Internacional De Arte Digital, Havana, Cuba; International Open Image 2003, London, England; and the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio.
In “Reverent/Irreverent,” DeLevie works with digital media to confront what he calls the “reconstruction of familial, historical, and sociological remembrance.” DeLevie’s challenge in using digital media is representing the nature and interpretation of memory within today’s society. Central to DeLevie’s work is his “questioning of television, film, and the Internet and how they currently function as the primary envoys for word, image, and sound in the modern world.” To view a portfolio of DeLevie’s work, go to www.delevie.net/. The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For further information, contact Lara Stremsterfer by phone at 206-6506 or by e-mail at visarts-ga@uis.edu.
