UIS to host 25th annual International Festival

SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois at Springfield will host its 25th annual International Festival from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, November 2.  For its silver jubilee, the festival will focus on the theme “Festival of Global Unity.”

Each year, international students at UIS stage a celebration featuring traditional performances, exhibits, and food from their homelands. Jonathan GoldbergBelle, director of UIS’ Office of International Affairs, noted, “To the best of our knowledge this is the longest-running student-affiliated tradition on the UIS campus, and one of the most popular.”

Performances this year – including dances from Thailand, India, and Bolivia, an international fashion show, music, and a skit -- will run from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, located in the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus.

From 6 to 8 p.m., cultural exhibits and food will be featured in the “international bazaar,” situated in the Food Emporium, also located in the lower level of the PAC. Exhibits will highlight the cultures of more than 20 countries and regions around the world with a number of interactive demonstrations.

The international menu will feature 25 to 30 dishes from a dozen countries and tentatively includes Hawaiian wedding cake, lumpia from the Philippines, vegetarian casserole from the Greek islands, makhani chicken from India, picante de pollo with rice and tomato and onion salad from Bolivia, arroz con bananas from Venezuela, shrimp gumbo and red beans and rice from the southern United States, as well as dishes from Thailand and Germany.

Tickets for the festival include performances, exhibits, and food. Cost is $10 for the general public, $5 for UIS students and children (under age 6 admitted free). Advance tickets are available at the UIS bursar’s office, lower level of the PAC, phone 206-6738. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door.

In conjunction with the International Festival, Le Ballet National du Senegal will perform at 8 p.m. in Sangamon Auditorium, sponsored by Friends of Sangamon Auditorium. Tickets for this performance are $24, $21, $19, and $12 and are available at the auditorium ticket office; call (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The international festival is sponsored by the UIS International Student Association and co-sponsored by UIS’ Office of International Affairs, Inter-Club Council Board, and Student Activities Committee. For more information, contact the UIS Office of International Affairs at 206-6678.
