Local children to appear in Ragtime at UIS’ Sangamon Auditorium

Springfield – Two local children will appear in upcoming performances of the Broadway musical Ragtime, to be presented Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, at the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium.  Auditions were held in collaboration with Springfield’s Community Art Center to cast the two boys who will play the cameo part of “Little Coalhouse” in the show’s dramatic conclusion.

Johnny Carter will play the role at the Friday evening performance.  The son of Pam Franks of Springfield, Johnny is a third grader at Harvard Park Elementary School.

Taivon Kincaid will play the role at the matinee and evening performances on Saturday.  The son of Carlos Kincaid and Davina Briggity, Taivon is in the Early Start program at Graham Elementary.

Ragtime, the four-time Tony Award®-winning musical based on E.L. Doctorow’s best-selling novel, is an epic story of three American families at the turn of the last century: one upper-middle class white, one socialist immigrant Jewish, and one Harlem black. As they embark on personal voyages of self-discovery, their lives become dramatically intertwined with one another, as well as with real-life historical characters including Henry Ford, Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan, and Booker T. Washington.

            Ragtime will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, October 5, and at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, October 6.  Tickets are $39, 36, 34, and 20 for the 8 p.m. performances and $36, 33, 31, and 18 for the 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets can be ordered by calling the auditorium Ticket Office at (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
