Marantz scholarship at UIS receives funds
November 3, 2004
SPRINGFIELD - The Jack A. Marantz Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Illinois at Springfield has received $12,000 in proceeds from the 19th annual Caddyshack Open. Sponsors of the annual charity golf outing are Bank of Springfield, Giganti and Giganti Jewelers, Midwest Office Supply, and Staff Carpets. All the money raised by the event is used to benefit a different organization each year.
Jack Marantz, who died in April 2003, was chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of Springfield. His son Tom, who succeeded his father as chair and CEO of the bank, presented UIS Chancellor Richard Ringeisen with the check during the 2004 Scholarship Luncheon held Wednesday at UIS.
“My dad was a member of the board that helped found this university,” Marantz said. “He really believed in this university, in education, and in basketball,” he said, noting that his father and Kevin Gamble, UIS men’s basketball coach, had been good friends. “So the establishment of this scholarship fund in his memory last spring seemed like an appropriate way to honor him,” Marantz said. “We are very happy today to add the Caddyshack proceeds to this scholarship fund. My dad would want access to education for everyone, and this is one way to help make that happen.”
The Marantz Scholarship underwrites scholarships for members of the men’s varsity basketball team at UIS, particularly those who have financial need and are in good academic standing. This year’s recipients are Antonio Andonov and Che Jordan.
The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation is the designated beneficiary of the 2005 Caddyshack Open.
