UIS to hold 32nd commencement May 10

 

SPRINGFIELD – Internationally known Lincoln expert Harold Holzer will deliver the address at the University of Illinois at Springfield’s 32nd commencement ceremony, the campus’ first outdoor ceremony (weather permitting), on Saturday, May 10. Of the 1,060 students eligible to graduate, 713 will participate in the ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m.

One of the country’s leading authorities on the political culture of the Civil War era, Holzer is co-chairman of the United States Lincoln Bicentennial Commission as well as the author, co-author, and editor of 21 books and more than 300 articles for both popular magazines and scholarly journals. His appearance on C-SPAN’s Booknotes series inspired the 1994 re-creation of the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates, for which he also served as historical consultant and on-air commentator. Holzer is currently vice president for communications and marketing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Graduates of all four UIS colleges – Business and Management, Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Public Affairs and Administration – will participate in the morning ceremony. Malcolm Levin, professor of Environmental Studies and Biology, has been chosen to serve as grand marshal. The student speaker, chosen by a campus committee, will be David Taylor, who will receive a bachelor of arts degree in Liberal Studies.

Faculty and students in each academic program select one graduating student who best exemplifies the goals and spirit of that program to serve as student marshal for the ceremony.

Following the ceremony, each college will host a reception for graduates and guests in the Public Affairs Center as follows. The College of Business and Management will hold its reception in the Sangamon Auditorium Lobby, level two. The College of Education and Human Services will hold its reception in conference rooms C and D, level one. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will hold its reception in the Food Emporium, level one. The College of Public Affairs and Administration will hold its reception in the Atrium Lounge, level three.

Commencement activities will begin on Thursday, May 8, with a Graduation Party, sponsored by the Office of Student Life, in the Student Life Plaza (outside the Student Center) on the east side of campus. An end-of-the-year picnic will be featured from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and a DJ dance, sponsored by the Student Activities Committee, will be held in the Food Emporium beginning at 9 p.m.  Events scheduled for Friday, May 9, include a performance by mentalist Christopher Carter at 7:30 p.m. and a coffeehouse with Bari Koral at 9 p.m.; both events will be held in the Housing Commons.

In the event of inclement weather on May 10, two commencement ceremonies will be held in Sangamon Auditorium. Ceremonies for the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Education and Human Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Ceremonies for the Colleges of Business and Management and Public Affairs and Administration will be at  1 p.m. Alternate plans are also in place for the college receptions in case indoor ceremonies are necessary.  If the weather looks questionable on Saturday morning, graduates and guests can call (217) 206-6600 after 6 a.m. to hear an announcement with specific information on where the ceremony will be held.

The ceremony will be broadcast on local cable access channel 4, and videotapes and DVDs will be available for purchase. A live webcast of commencement will also be available on the UIS website at www.uis.edu.
