SPRINGFIELD – Internationally known Lincoln expert Harold
Holzer will deliver the address at the University of Illinois at Springfield’s
32nd commencement ceremony, the campus’ first outdoor ceremony
(weather permitting), on Saturday, May 10. Of the 1,060 students eligible to
graduate, 713 will participate in the ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m.
One of the country’s leading authorities on
the political culture of the Civil War era, Holzer is co-chairman of the United
States Lincoln Bicentennial Commission as well as the author, co-author, and
editor of 21 books and more than 300 articles for both popular magazines and
scholarly journals. His appearance on C-SPAN’s Booknotes series inspired
the 1994 re-creation of the seven Lincoln-Douglas debates, for which he also
served as historical consultant and on-air commentator. Holzer is currently
vice president for communications and marketing at The Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York City.
Graduates of all four UIS colleges – Business
and Management, Education and Human Services, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and
Public Affairs and Administration – will participate in the morning ceremony.
Malcolm Levin, professor of Environmental Studies and Biology, has been chosen
to serve as grand marshal. The student speaker, chosen by a campus committee,
will be David Taylor, who will receive a bachelor of arts degree in Liberal
Studies.
Faculty and students in each academic program
select one graduating student who best exemplifies the goals and spirit of that
program to serve as student marshal for the ceremony.
