SPRINGFIELD – Karl
Scroggin, music director and program host at WUIS (91.9 FM/Springfield) and
WIPA (89.3/Pittsfield), will share his love of classical music with students at
Springfield=s Butler Elementary School in a presentation beginning
at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, March 24.
Scroggin’s special interest is the music and
instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque era and he has played stringed
instruments from this period –
such as the lute and viola da gamba –
since 1978. This presentation will focus on the historical development of these
instruments, their specialized notational systems, and their place in Western
classical music.
Scroggin, a frequent musical performer in the
Springfield area, enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for period instruments and
music with young people. His presentation at Butler Elementary is funded by the
Meredith Foundation as part of a series of concerts for area schools, featuring
a variety of music from classical to bluegrass, as broadcast each week on
WUIS-WIPA.
