Springfield Public Television Access 4 wins national award

June 23, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - Access 4, Springfield’s public access television channel, has been selected as the winner in the Overall Excellence in the Public Access category of the Hometown Video Festival, a national contest sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media. Access 4 is operated by the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Office of Electronic Media and is funded by Insight Communications. The Office of Electronic Media is a unit of UIS’ Center for State Policy and Leadership.

This is the third time that Access 4 has received this award, which will be presented on July 8 at the Alliance International Convention in Tampa, Florida.

Seen on Insight Communications cable systems in Springfield, Rochester, Chatham, Divernon, and Pawnee, Access 4 affords local residents and non-profit organizations the opportunity to produce programs to air on Channel 4 and also to promote events via the channel’s community calendar. Area residents produced over 400 hours of local programs in 2003 and Access 4 currently has 68 regular series producers. These local producers receive technical assistance from the staff and students in the Office of Electronic Media at no cost.

UIS Chancellor Richard Ringeisen noted, “Access 4 is a shining example of how the community, the university, and private industry can work together. Local producers spend many volunteer hours producing programs that address community needs while UIS provides staff and students with technical expertise to assist them in creating educational, informational, and entertaining programs. The university is proud to partner with Insight Communications and applauds them for their continued funding of this valuable community service.”

Jan Morrow, program director in the Office of Electronic Media and coordinator for ACCESS 4, added, “In 2005 ACCESS 4 will celebrate 20 years of award-winning public access television. With support from the city of Springfield and Insight Communications, UIS looks forward to providing this outstanding service to the community for many more years.”

The Hometown Video Festival, local cable’s largest video festival, honors and promotes community media and local cable programs that are first produced and distributed on public, educational, and government access cable channels. Awards are presented to creative programs that address community needs and develop diverse community involvement. This year’s festival drew more than 1,500 entries.
