UIS to offer new graduate certificate in legal aspects of education
July 27, 2005
SPRINGFIELD – The Educational Leadership Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield will offer a Graduate Certificate in Legal Aspects of Education beginning with the 2005 fall semester. The program comprises 18 hours of graduate coursework and will be offered only online.
Dr. Scott Day, EDL chair, and Dr. Margaret Noe, EDL faculty and program director, explained that the new certificate program is designed to provide opportunities for educational leaders to increase their knowledge of legal issues that may affect them professionally and also to enable them to meet statutorily mandated requirements for professional development and certification.
“The demand for these courses has been very consistent and continues to rise,” Noe said. “Many students in the Teacher Leadership and Educational Leadership degree programs have been taking them as electives.”
Day noted, “While this certificate is aimed at teachers who are seeking to advance their professional credentials, it will also allow non-degree-seeking students the opportunity to gain a well-rounded view of legal perspectives in education.”
Educators who hold prominent roles in their districts’ collective bargaining units, state educational professional organizations, or leadership positions within their school districts may find the certificate course work especially useful. However, Noe said that previous students have typically been public and private school teachers, educational support staff, pupil-personnel service staff, parents, board members, advocates, and administrators -- from central Illinois as well as from several states and foreign countries.
Prospective students should submit standard UIS graduate application forms and transcripts and evidence of a completed bachelor’s or master’s degree to the UIS Office of Admissions and Records. Qualified applicants will be notified of their acceptance by the Educational Leadership program and will qualify for e-tuition, assessed for students who attend UIS only online.
Registration forms and tuition information are available at www.uis.edu/registration/, or by calling 217/206-4847 or 888/977-4847.
