Public welcome to join UIS music ensembles

January 7, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the five campus ensembles currently available through the Music Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Auditions are not required to join the groups outlined below, all of which could be taken for academic credit.

Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, observes, "Whether you've been singing or playing an instrument for one year or many years, there's a place for you with UIS music."

Lindy Bair, UIS student and member of the chorus adds, "Music is a fun way to get involved on campus and meet new people. Everyone can take advantage of this great opportunity."

Rehearsals begin the week of January 12 and meet in room 208 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Each group will be featured in the UIS Music Showcase concert to be held on campus Friday, April 30, in the Studio Theatre.

The UIS Chorus made its debut in fall 2001 and has given performances ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway classics. Chorus rehearsals are 7 to 9:15 p.m. Tuesdays and, for those who are unable to make evening rehearsals, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

The UIS Chamber Music Ensemble performs a variety of string-based chamber music, from Renaissance to modern. Ensemble rehearsals are from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

The UIS World Percussion Ensemble is for students interested in hand-drumming techniques of various cultures. No experience is necessary to join. The group meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays.

The UIS Native American Flute Circle meets on the second Monday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the Central Illinois Flute Circle.

The UIS Band, open to anyone who plays a musical instrument, performs at UIS home basketball games. Rehearsals are 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays.

Academic credit for these programs is available to those who have been admitted to study at UIS. Registration for the spring 2004 semester is ongoing through January 18; late registration is available after that date. Those who wish to earn academic credit in the UIS Chorus should enroll in MUS 301 Vocal Music Ensemble. To earn credit in other groups, enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.
