Public welcome to join in UIS campus music ensembles


SPRINGFIELD Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the five campus ensembles currently available through the music program at University of Illinois at Springfield. Auditions are not required to join the groups outlined below, which can also be taken for academic credit. All rehearsals are held in room 208 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus.

The UIS All Campus Choir made its debut in fall 2001 and has given several performances in a variety of musical genres, ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway classics. Choir rehearsals are 7 to 9:15 p.m. Tuesdays and, for those who are not able to make the Tuesday rehearsals, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

The UIS Chamber Ensemble is comprised of string and wind instruments and performs classical music ranging from Renaissance to modern. Ensemble rehearsals are from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

The UIS World Percussion Ensemble, offered ONLY for academic credit, is for students interested in hand-drumming techniques of various cultures. No experience is necessary to join. The group meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

The UIS Native American Flute Circle meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays. Monthly meetings will be also be sponsored by the Central Illinois Flute Circle.



The UIS Pep Band, open to anyone who plays a musical instrument, performs at UIS home basketball games. Rehearsals are 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays.

Academic credit for these programs is available to those who have been admitted to study at UIS. Registration for the spring 2003 semester is ongoing through January 19; late registration is available after that date. Those who wish to earn academic credit in the All Campus Choir should enroll in UNI 291 Vocal Music Ensemble. For academic credit for any of the other groups, enroll in UNI 292 Instrumental Music Ensemble.
