Solo pianist George Winston to visit Sangamon Auditorium

SPRINGFIELD — Self-described "rural folk piano" player and Grammy award-winner George Winston will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 2, at the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium, sponsored by The Sikich Group.

Winston’s most recent album, Plains, is inspired by his childhood in the plains of eastern Montana. While growing up in Miles City and Billings, Winston began listening to the radio in the late 1950s, during the heyday of pop instrumental hits by artists such as Floyd Cramer, The Ventures, Booker T and the MGs, and many others. His melodic style comes from these influences, as well as folk music.

Between 1980 and 1982 he recorded a trilogy of albums -- Autumn, Winter into Spring, and December -- of impressionistic, seasonal-themed piano musings which laid much of the groundwork for the new age boom to follow. Winston’s musical interests extend beyond piano to include the enchantingly melodic Hawaiian slack key guitar tradition. This interest led him in 1985 to begin recording the masters of this form. His Dancing Cat label’s Slack Key Guitar Masters Series now includes over 25 releases.

A Pre-show Discussion & Questions session (PDQ), sponsored by Barnes & Noble, will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, PAC level 1.

Tickets are $22, 19, 17, and 11. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office, (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The auditorium administrative offices can be reached at (217) 206-6150 or by e-mail at
