Community invited to join UIS musical groups

August 10, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – Members of the community who are interested in sharing their musical talents are invited to join one or more of the five campus ensembles currently gearing up for the fall semester at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Auditions are not required to join any of the groups outlined below, and some can be taken for academic credit, if desired.

The groups are the UIS Band, Chorus, Chamber Orchestra, Native American Flute Circle, and World Percussion Club.

Music program directors are Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, and Todd Cranson, assistant director of co-curricular music. Both Graf and Cranson are quick to point out that dedicated attendance and a desire to realize one’s musical potential are the only requirements for membership.

Rehearsals begin the week of August 21; all groups will meet in room 33 of the Visual and Performing Arts Building, on the east side of campus. Each ensemble works on a varied repertory that is tailored to the group at hand.  Rehearsal schedules are as follows.

The UIS Chorus has given performances, ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway classics, at such events as the Springfield Festival of Trees, the UIS Talent Expo, and UIS commencement ceremonies.  The chorus will rehearse on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. First rehearsal is August 22. UIS students who wish to receive academic credit should enroll in MUS 101 Music or MUS 301 Vocal Music Ensemble.

The UIS Band performs in concerts and at campus activities such as basketball games and pep rallies.  Band rehearsals are scheduled for Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. beginning August 21.  UIS students who wish to earn academic credit should enroll in MUS 105 or 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.

The first meeting of the UIS World Percussion Club will be August 23 at 5:30 p.m. Rehearsals will be determined at that time, based on participants’ schedules.

The Native American Flute Circle will meet the second Sunday of every month, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The UIS Chamber Orchestra performs a variety of music, from Renaissance to Modern.  This group meets on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The first rehearsal will be August 24. To take this class for academic credit, enroll in MUS 105 or 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.

Academic credit is available to those who have been admitted to study at UIS. Registration for the fall 2006 semester is currently underway; classes begin Monday, August 21.
