UIS student exhibits “Push to Open” in downtown SpringfieldApril 15, 2005SPRINGFIELD - “Push to Open,” a one-man, one-night show featuring paintings by UIS Visual Arts student Joseph Miller, will be on display at the Quality Inn and Suites/State House Inn, 101 East Adams in downtown Springfield, on Wednesday, April 27. A reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Miller’s paintings examine the presentation and observation of human form found in the media. He explains, “As with emotional reactions humans often have to music, visual art has the ability to transcend logical categories of meaning and allow a moving sensory response to the human body. In other words, if artists push the existing boundaries of knowledge about the body, new territories of emotional and sensory response will open before us. Push to open.” Miller will graduate from UIS with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts this spring. He received his associate’s degree in Art from Lewis and Clark Community College in 2002 before transferring to UIS, where he concentrated his study in painting. While at UIS, he was awarded the Donald M. Lesh Memorial Scholarship in Art, served as student representative for the Visual Arts program, and played on the varsity basketball team. Miller is currently a freelance artist for Chicago production company Walking Shadows, where he is at work on storyboards, visual references, and related materials for the company’s upcoming film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
