UIS music groups to present Spring Showcase Concert
April 14, 2005
SPRINGFIELD - Music groups at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present their annual Spring Showcase Concert beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the Studio Theatre, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The program will feature the UIS Band, Chamber Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble, and Chorus performing a wide range of musical genres, from world music to classical to folk.
Highlights will include the chorus performing songs from Japan and southern India, including a devotional song in Hindi taught to them by a student in the Computer Science program. The Chamber Ensemble will perform a ragtime selection and a Bartok suite based on peasant dances. The Band will perform classic and jazz pieces featuring several solos.
UIS Music is under the direction of Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology. Since its beginning in 2001, the program has developed and grown, and opportunities for campus musicians to demonstrate their skills continue to expand.
Notes Graf, “The Spring Showcase gives all our groups an opportunity to perform the music they have been working on throughout the spring semester.”
