UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Five Artists”

SPRINGFIELD “Five Artists,” an exhibit of paintings, graphic design, ceramics, and furniture by five graduating seniors in the Visual Arts program at the University of Illinois at Springfield, will be on display at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery from April 15 through May 15. An opening reception with the artists is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the gallery. Both the reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

Students whose works are featured in this exhibit are Chris Britt, Sheryle Henry, Dave Hine, Kate Riley, and Veronica Williams. Gallery manager Sharon Black observes, “Five unique personalities have collaborated to draw the space into a colorful and stimulating environment that twists some classics into new perceptions.”

Editorial cartoonist Britt breaks his mold and “employs his brush as a partisan weapon” with bold colors and abstract shapes that carry over into his primitive, distressed ceramics. Graphic designer Hine sends subtle yet powerful messages through bold use of color and darkened silhouettes. Craftswoman Riley incorporates her modern tea sets into playful settings with funky furniture to blur the line between usefulness and playfulness. Williams’ talents range from her pots to her computer mouse in various design projects and Henry’s watercolors juxtapose peaceful places with colorful contrasts.

The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. For more information about the gallery or the exhibit, call Black at 206-6506.
