WUIS/WIPA program wins three national awards

SPRINGFIELD Illinois Edition, a program produced by WUIS (91.9/Springfield) and WIPA (89.3/Pittsfield), will receive three top awards from the Associated Press Broadcasters Association when the Illinois News Broadcasters convention meets later this month in Rock Island.

Reporter Tom Weber’s program on “Illinois Ballparks,” focusing on the construction of minor league baseball stadiums in the state, and Pittsfield bureau chief Shawn Johnson’s piece “The Mother Road,” a look at Route 66 in Illinois, received first- and second-place in the Documentary category, respectively.

Regional reporter Kavitha Cardoza’s “Road Kill Guy,” a profile of a highway worker with a unique job, took second place in the Best Feature Reporting category.

Illinois Edition is a 13-week program that airs on WUIS/WIPA from July through September. Public radio WUIS/WIPA is operated by the University of Illinois at Springfield.
